Ian Rogers put our philosophy into words in a wonderful presentation that he’s posted on his website. It covers how powerful the scale of the Internet can be for media. In our case, it’s explains how giving away our artists’ music away creates vastly more interest resulting in higher sales.
I’d like to convince you of three things today:
- There is more opportunity in leveraging the scale of the Web than trying to create scarcity. We’ve all been engaged in many attempts at creating scarcity in digital music and none of them have worked. Meanwhile, others have been leveraging the scale of the Web with great success. We should learn from this pattern and apply our energy appropriately.
- We will do this together by creating a loosely-coupled value chain including users as value creators. The value chain is not owned by a single entity (LimeWire, Apple, or Universal). There are many participants in a healthy ecosystem. Furthermore, users are no longer just consumers, they’re active participants adding value and any successful solution will leverage this user-contributed value.
- We need to work together to create the Media Web. Here I’ll step off into nerd-ness for a minute, but I’ll try to tie it to a concrete example so you see what it is I’m getting at clearly.

Damn, that was dope. Last night was a good show, even without a proper sound check we made heads nod. The Spacetones put it down as usual with Casey dancing brilliantly behind some of the best beats in the region. Dj Geeg added serious charisma to the evening and cut it up nicely. Steady Business held down there shit, and, I think, tried to blow the sound system! Ryan Sublette, my producer came in from Columbia and luckily got in with out any ID. I played too! My favorite part of the entire show was the freestyle! The crowed loved it, and with out posting any flyer’s we brought in 100. So, here are some pics from the evening… oh yeah, big up to Obnoxious and all of his friends for the support.
“Recut, Reframe, Recycle: Quoting Copyrighted Material in User-Generated Video,” will be the topic of discussion tomorrow, Jan. 7 at the 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show. The study argues that many online videos using copyrighted material are eligible for Fair Use. They also put these videos into 9 categories (check out this spreadsheet for loads of examples):
1. Parody and satire: Copyrighted material used in spoofing of popular mass media, celebrities or politicians (Baby Got Book)
2. Negative or critical commentary: Copyrighted material used to communicate a negative message (Metallica Sucks)
3. Positive commentary: Copyrighted material used to communicate a positive message (Steve Irwin Fan Tribute)
4. Quoting to trigger discussion: Copyrighted material used to highlight an issue and prompt public awareness, discourse (Abstinence PSA on Feministing.com)
5. Illustration or example: Copyrighted material used to support a new idea with pictures and sound (Evolution of Dance)
6. Incidental use: Copyrighted material captured as part of capturing something else (Prisoners Dance to Thriller)
7. Personal reportage/diaries: Copyrighted material incorporated into the chronicling of a personal experience (Me on stage with U2 — AGAIN!!!)
8. Archiving of vulnerable or revealing materials: Copyrighted material that might have a short life on mainstream media due to controversy (Stephen Colbert’s Speech at the White House Correspondent’s Dinner)
9. Pastiche or collage: Several copyrighted materials incorporated together into a new creation, or in other cases, an imitation of sorts of copyrighted work (Apple Commercial)

YO YO, e$money here everybody,
its been a while since I’ve blogged some ish so i thought i would remind everyone of the wonderful little hip hop party we have downtown tomorrow at Nathan p. Murphy’s at 9:30. if you’ve never been to a lemondrop show before, you’ll be in for a treat! Spacetones and Jimmy Spits will be tearing it up and also this show will be the first for my collaboration with The Nocturnal Doses which is called Steady Business.
On my more personal news, i just got back from a holiday trip to California. It was a great experience and i got to see some of my family that lives out there. One of those being my uncle Jesse who happens to be a avid record collector like my self. Long story short, he gave me a bundle of groovin’ records which means new material for my upcoming album ,Soul in ya Bowl. I have not panned out the release date in spite of a flood of new material I’ve been working on but everyone can expect guest mc’s such as jimmy spits and of course the eclectic, sample driven hip hop instrumentals that I’m know for.Hope everybody had a good holiday and hope to see everyone tomorrow night!
