The Verbs!

We just wanted to say ‘hello’ to Chuck and Kevin, The Spacetones, and everyone else checkin’ out LemonDrop records. The Verbs are excited to be on board and can’t wait to record very soon. Mike, our singer/guitarist, had an appendectomy yesterday, so we’ll be out of commission for a week or so, but no worries, we will survive!!!

The Verbs are a foursome from Springfield, even though we all grew up together in the small town of Mansfield, Missouri. The band formed in January, 2007, and it has been a fast-moving, very encouraging five months. We enjoy the classic tunes, so many of our influences come from the good ol’ days, but we love music in general, so being a part of a label like LemonDrop that isn’t defined by genre or popularity status really appeals to us.

Stay tuned for more from Josh, Ben, Mike, and Justin: The Verbs!

Introducing the Loft

June 26th, 2007 by chuckmo

The Station

Due to several requests, here are some pictures of the loft. As you can see, it’s a little messy. Regardless, almost all of the recording and mixing will be done here by yours truly. More pictures after the jump (including a rasterbated picture of The Dude.)

Recording Equipment Update

June 25th, 2007 by chuckmo

As I mentioned earlier, I’m currently without a recording interface for my computer. I called up Presonus today and, despite making a product that broke for no reason, their customer service is outstanding. The guy was happy to help me find out the status of my Firepod. He told me they replaced two capacitors and the status LED, and that it would ship out at the end of the day. Sure enough, I got an email from FedEx this afternoon with the tracking number. What does this all mean? Recording starts next week!

One thing I’ve noticed while living in Springfield is that almost everyone in town either plays music or is an artist of some kind. While we’ll be embracing the music side, I’m still reaching out to the artists we may or may not know that want to be a part of LemonDrop. I’ve got a few friends on board to make album art, t-shirt designs, tour posters, etc. once we get up and running and that’s great. But I know there’s plenty of aspiring artists out there looking for a place to shine. Just like we’ll be trying to get a community of musicians together to record both their own music and help out on other band’s albums, I want LemonDrop to slowly become recognized for it’s interesting artwork as well. This goes for filmmakers as well. With the creative commons license, if you find a song by one of our bands that just strikes you and you want to make a music video for it, go wild. I’m sure we can set up a section for fan made music videos if people actually go to the work of making them.

The Death of the Record Industry

June 23rd, 2007 by chuckmo

Albums Sold Annually

This chart shows the number of albums sold annually by the major labels. It’s from a wonderful article in Rolling Stone on the death of said labels. Although Rolling Stone is just covering it now, most industry professionals have seen this coming for a long time.

Back in February, I went with Missouri State’s Entertainment Management Association to the Concert Industry Consortium 2007. The nation’s top players in the concert industry like Pollstar and LiveNation were in attendance. The death of major labels was the recurring theme in discussions throughout the week. Well, “dead” is a harsh term. More succinctly, the industry is undergoing a major change, and this change is big enough to put the major labels out of business.

Personally, I think this is great news. No longer will our culture be defined by bubblegum pop and manufactured stars. Instead, the people will define what’s popular. If it’s good music, people will play it out and share it with their friends.

This is the idea we’re building this label on: music controlled by the fans.

What’s happenin’ people? I’d like to see some other MCs get in on our next album; not that I’m tired of Tommy, but we want more styles and flows for the new one. If you are interested in laying down a verse or two for the new record, shoot us a message at www.thespacetones.com. We are interested in working with creative MCs, vocalists, singers, or any others who feel like being creative with their folds. Let us know!

Peace

Casey

The Other Half Speaks

June 21st, 2007 by kevin

Friends, lovers, and everyone in between…

You’re probably wondering, at least if you’re following the label because you know chuckmo, who in the heck this Kevin Ehlers cat is. Well, long story short, I met Charlie because we were both Entertainment Management majors. I’d just gotten back from a summer spent living in Seattle interning for Sub Pop, which was very cool, and in my search to find something to do with my life after graduation I ran into Charlie, who had grand ideas of starting a record label. We had a few meetings and shook on it. I graduated and here we are as LemonDrop Records.

Recording with the Tones

June 20th, 2007 by chuckmo

The Spacetones and I have been discussing recording their new record for the last month or so. We were always waiting on something… the move, the new computer, free time, etc. The stars aligned in our favor 2 weeks ago, and Casey brought over his equipment to lay down the beats.

…and then my interface died.

I shipped it off that day for repair, but there’s no word on when it will be returning. I’m contemplating running down to Guitar Center to get a new one while I wait. Then, once I get my fixed one back, I’ll just return the one from Guitar Center. Is that unethical? Yeah, I think it might be. Regardless, it will probably be next week before we get down to business.

By the way, if you haven’t listened to the ‘Tones, check out their Myspace. I’ve also been setting up the pad for recording… I’ve got a little over a hundred feet of sound foam lying around the loft. Pictures coming soon. Video, too!

The Inaugural Post

June 19th, 2007 by chuckmo

Welcome to the site! I’ve been working on the blog portion of the site so that we can start sharing our experiences getting this label started. This site will probably change quite a bit by the time it’s done. What’s that? You have questions? This aint Radioshack, but I got some answers after the jump.
